Sexual Assault

What To Do If You Or Someone You Know Has Been Sexually Assaulted

Steps:

  • Get to a safe place.

  • Call 911 if you are ready to report; OR

  • Go to your local ER to check for injuries and/or collect evidence.

    • If you want to have a rape kit done at the ER, do not shower beforehand.

    • WISH Medical Women’s Health staff are not trained to provide sexual assault exams or collect rape kits.

  • Call the nearest rape crisis program for crisis intervention, hospital accompaniment, counseling, courtroom advocacy, support groups, information, and/or referrals.

  • Tell someone you trust to get support.

  • You may be able to file for a civil protection order to keep the offender away from you (see https://www.womenslaw.org/laws/general/restraining-orders).

  • If you’re a student, you may be able to file a complaint with your school.

  • Hotline: 1-800-656-4673
